While
everyone is overjoyed at the success of the students in their JSC
(Junior School Certificate) examinations, there was something very
disappointing and alarming. This year, the passing rate and achievement
of GPA 5 increased more than expected. But a great number of students
also performed poorly in English and Mathematicswhich can have
disturbing effects in their future.
The average passing rate of the eight education boards is 86.11%. All over the country a total of 44,158 students got GPA 5. This definitely indicates success. However, let us have a look at the passing rate of some students as per subject, and then decide whether to be happy or alarmed at this success.
The passing rate for English in Dhaka Board is 88.62%, Rajshahi Board is 86.61%, Jessore Board is 87.94%, Chittagong Board is 89.25% and Dinajpur Board is 88%. The passing rate for Bengali in Dhaka Board is 98.45%, Rajshahi Board is 98.63%, Jessore Board is 96.33%, Chittagong Board is 95.29% and Dinajpur Board is 98.38%.
It is quite evident that students are passing easily in Bengali but not so easily in English. The passing rate for Mathematics is also not so high. It is around 90% in all the boards. Whereas, the passing rate for General Science is from 98% to 99% in all the boards. Bangladesh and Global Studies, a subject introduced in place of Social Science, also has a passing rate from 98 to 99% in all eight boards.
The reason for poor performance in English is quite known. English is a foreign language, plus there are not enough qualified teachers all over the country. The method of teaching is also not quite up to the mark. The sole focus of English teachers seems to be making the students obtain marks in exam. However, they do not actually try to make the students learn the language. Its quite sad. From this year, the curriculum has been changed. Let us hope that the new books will give the teachers a new push to change their methods of teaching.
Although I blamed the teachers for the poor performance in English, for Math the students are the ones to blame. In Bangladesh, a majority of students have some sort of math-phobia! Students do not consider Mathematics to be a fun subject, rather a very boring and dull subject. Students often memorise problems and solutions from textbooks and pass exams in this way! The teachers from the primary level should try to concentrate on the proficiency of students in maths. Mathematics should be made a fun subject for the students and made sure there is no fear of the subject among the students.
Math and English are two very important subjects. In order to develop our country we need to be advanced in science and technology. For this, careful study of Science, Math and English is indispensable. So, it is quite important for us to focus on the foundation of the students in these two subjects - See more at: http://www.daily-sun.com/details_yes_15-01-2013_Evaluation-of-JSC-result:-English-and-math-in-perspective_380_1_19_1_2.html#sthash.8RBda6Wr.dpuf
