Colourful lights are appearing on almost all the streets the cricketers will use. The roads from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium have been magnificently adorned.
Road islands at Farmgate, Karwan Bazar intersection have also been impressively decorated.
Boats, huts, rickshaws and other traditional objects have been made with lights at Bijoy Sarani.
Dhaka North City Corporation’s Mirpur zone Executive Officer Rafiqul Islam said they lighted up the city streets to project society, nature and economic conditions of Bangladesh.
“We’re trying. Now it’s for the spectators to evaluate (what we’ve done),” he said.
Bangladesh Architecture Institute has, however, described tiles-covered concrete walls erected on road dividers and road island as part of the beautification as ‘tasteless’ and ‘bizarre’.
City dwellers are happy with the decorations, but they want to see Bangladeshi cricketers do well in the tournament.
Police Sub-Inspector ‘Naimul’ said: “I’m doing night-shift duty to see the lighting. I’m feeling nice. But I would feel far better if the cricketers can sparkle.”
